Fun and Learning Idea #14
Letter Day
Pick a letter to practice for a day. Start with these letters first: w, p, b, d, t, m, n, h, y. Write the letter down and paste it somewhere visible, such as the refrigerator. Choose simple words that begin with these sounds.
Practice words throughout the day that start with that sound. For example, the letter w: wood, water, wall; paper, pretty, pet; dog, dresser, dad; etc. As you practice your words, write them down on the sheet of paper.
Point to the letter each time you write a word. Once your child is comfortable with the first set of letters, add these letters: f, v, s, z, g, k, c. These letters are the most challenging sounds for children to master: j, l, r. Most importantly, make a game of it and have fun!
Your child is practicing these learning goals:
- Children seek assistance from adults when needed
- Children demonstrate positive negotiation skills
- Children recognize, appreciate, and respect similarities and differences in people
- Children demonstrate belief in their abilities
Learning goals are connected to Washington State's Early Learning and Development Benchmarks that link early learning with grade school goals.

Find Child Care
We help you find the best child care to meet your child's needs. Our phone representatives provide one-on-one, free customized referrals to licensed caregivers that meet your specific criteria. Whether looking for a preschool in a child care center, a licensed family child care provider, or after-school care, we narrow the search to save valuable time.
This referral service is funded for 25 hours per week. Calls and emails are returned within 24 business hours. Our hours of operation are:
