Science and Math Advancement Reachout for Teachers
SMART represents an alliance of school teachers, grades K-12, higher education faculty and representatives of local industry organized to provide support for science and math teachers. Goals for this experience include:
- Teachers helping teachers
- Facilitating networking with colleagues
- Professional enrichment
The purpose of SMART is to provide support and training for teachers of science and mathematics throughout southwestern Washington and the greater Portland area.
Our goal is to create a forum for educators to interact with professionals who use mathematics and science every day, and to provide experiences which will allow educators to keep up with changes and advances in his or her subject area.
A series of conferences are held during the academic year and follow a format which include workshops, dinner, and a keynote speaker.
The organizing committee is made up of educators and citizens from public and private organizations and agencies who volunteer their time and resources to make this program a reality.
SMART conferences provide an opportunity for educators to:
- Update content knowledge
- Explore practical applications of science and math content
- Examine a wide variety of curriculum and instructional material
- Explore new concepts or pedagogy in math and science teaching and learning
- Gain new skills for using equipment and instructional materials
- Share ideas and expertise with other teachers and specialists
- Develop an understanding of standards for math and science
- Spend an enjoyable evening with colleagues in an environment that promotes professional exchange.
SMART Session Proposals
Over the past five years, our programs have served thousands of educators and have received excellent reviews.
You can help us contribute to this tradition in the following way:
- Designate an employee to assist the organizing committee.
- Present at a workshop
- Sponsor a quest speaker for future conferences
- Designate a cash award to be used for supplies or materials or for operating costs to run the conference
- Provide door prizes
